Alberta's Emission Trends Update
So, how is Alberta doing in the area of emissions, especially for power generation? I took a quick look at the latest available National Inventory Report 1990-2023, published in December, 2025, to find some answers. Firstly, there is a steady downtrend, with 2023 emissions totaling 263.4 MT CO2e, or about 10% lower than the peak in 2014 of 293.6 MT. For comparison, our neighbour to the west, British Columbia, which has roughly the same population, had 60.4 MT of emissions in

Global Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage: Key Players and CO2 Management Efforts
The world faces a pressing challenge: reducing carbon dioxide emissions to slow climate change. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) offers a way to trap CO2 before it reaches the atmosphere, then either reuse it or store it underground. This technology is gaining momentum globally, with several countries and companies leading efforts to manage millions of tons of CO2 annually. Understanding who the major players are and how much CO2 they handle reveals the current

Greenhouse Gas Emissions "101"
A few things I learned last week at the ECO Canada GHG Emissions Management Training Program: Climate change has been correlated to changes in Greenhouse Gas quantities in the Earth's atmosphere, which traps (absorbs) more of the Sun's radiation and causes an increase in average global temperatures. In addition to natural greenhouse gases ("GHG") such as water vapor and ozone, increasing amounts of carbon dioxide ("CO2"), methane ("CH4"), nitrous oxide ("NO2") and fluorinated

JV Agreements Statute of Limitations
Last week, I completed the PJVA's Joint Venture Administration Course instructed by industry veteran Gloria Chase of CNRL. A great refresher on how to handle Mail Ballots, AFE's, A&D, Exhibit revisions and Agreement Maintenance. The most interesting topic for discussion for me was centered on Statute of Limitations and how the industry extended the deadline for claims to four (4) years from two (2) years under an Industry Agreement in 2001 for those companies that were paid s

"Adventures in Optimization" - Part 1
My 44+ year journey in the Canadian oil & gas industry has provided many, many experiences and learnings, especially in the area of price risk management and revenue optimization for junior/intermediate oil & gas producers. In the early years, discussions and decisions around how to optimize future revenue were based on opinions and subjective knowledge, often referred to "gut feel". In a cyclical industry, where uncertainty of future prices is always a threat to company succ

"What Drives You Crazy?"
A business coach that I worked with in a previous corporate life used to start our sessions with this question and after offering up 2-4 topics he would shrewdly pick one that he thought he might be able to help me with and our session would evolve from there. Asking open-ended questions and then sitting back and listening carefully provides a rich opportunity to identify and define customer-centric problems that need a solution. It is important not to try to immediately solv
